How Long Should You Study for the IFC Exam?

By Harry Vadalkar, CFA · Updated May 2026

Sweet spot: 40–60 hours over 4–6 weeks.

Under 30 hours and you'll fail. Over 80 hours and you're studying inefficiently — usually re-reading instead of practising questions.

3 study plans by life situation

Plan A: Focused (4 weeks · ~12 hrs/week)

For people between jobs, on leave, or studying full-time.

  • Week 1: Ch 1–9 (videos + summary notes)
  • Week 2: Ch 10–18 + Mock #1
  • Week 3: Drill weak chapters + Mock #2 and #3
  • Week 4: Mock #4, #5, #6. Review every wrong answer. Light review, sleep, exam.

Plan B: Working full-time (8 weeks · ~6 hrs/week)

Most students. 1 hour weekdays, ~3 hours per weekend day.

  • Weeks 1–3: One chapter per evening (Mon–Thu) + chapter quizzes on Sat
  • Week 4: Catch up + Mock #1
  • Weeks 5–6: Drill weak areas + Mock #2 and #3
  • Week 7: Mock #4 and #5
  • Week 8: Mock #6, review, exam

Plan C: Cramming (2 weeks · 30+ hrs/week)

Not recommended, but if life happens:

  • Days 1–7: Power through all 18 chapter videos. Skip note-taking, focus on understanding.
  • Days 8–10: Mocks 1 and 2. Review every wrong answer.
  • Days 11–13: Mocks 3, 4, 5. Drill weakest 3 chapters.
  • Day 14: Mock 6, light review, sleep.

Honest warning: ~50% of cramming students fail. Give yourself 4+ weeks if you possibly can.

What the hours should look like

A common mistake: students count time spent staring at material as "studying." It's not. Real studying breaks down as:

  • ~40% practice questions (the single highest-ROI activity)
  • ~30% video/text learning
  • ~20% mock exams (timed, full-length)
  • ~10% review of wrong answers (the second-highest-ROI activity)

If your 50 study hours were 90% reading the textbook, you're going to fail. Switch the ratio.

Signs you're ready

  • You're scoring 75%+ on full timed mocks (target: 80%+ for safety)
  • You can explain any chapter topic to a non-finance friend in 60 seconds
  • Calculation questions (Ch 6, 14) take you under 90 seconds each
  • You're not panicking about ethics scenarios — you trust your gut: disclose, document, escalate
